IFMC welcomes all new patients, including overseas students.
Please call the practice on 02 4252 5200 to make an appointment.
New patient appointments are 30 minutes long to give your doctor the time they need to review your medical history.
If applicable, please bring your current medication and any other relevant information with you to your appointment.
IFMC has an arrangement with BUPA and AHM for overseas students to pay the gap only for medical consultations.
Please remember to bring your Medicare, Concession or BUPA/AHM cards to your appointment.
No patient will be refused medical treatment on the grounds of gender, age, religion, ethnicity, sexual preference or medical condition.
We aim to treat our patients with respect and sensitivity at all times and have quiet areas available for patients who need them.
Abusive or aggressive behaviour will not be tolerated and patients exhibiting this behavior will be asked to leave the premises.
As a patient, it is your responsibility to keep appointments or let reception know at the earliest opportunity if you need to change your appointment. It is also your responsibility to inform us of changes to your personal details.
We encourage patients to play an active role in their healthcare.
We welcome your questions about any aspect of your care including recommended medications, tests or procedures.
Patients should make sure they fully understand what will happen before, during and after a hospital stay or procedure.
Every time you check in for an appointment the receptionist will ask for:
This is a legal requirement stipulated by Medicare.
It is also important to make sure the correct patient is booked in to see the doctor, and a good prompt to remind patients to update details that may have changed since their last visit.
We will also ask for an emergency contact name and phone number.
This may be your next of kin, or somebody else whom you wish to be contacted in case of emergency.
All doctors strive to be on time, but unfortunately may run late if there has been an emergency or some other delay beyond our control. As each consultation varies in length, it is not always possible for the receptionist to predict how late the doctor is running or to contact patients when their doctor is running late.
If you wish, you are welcome to call before your appointment time to check if the doctor is on time.
When our doctors are not available they have a designated replacement who will attend to their patients.
They will have access to your fully computerised file and will confer with your doctor as needed to ensure continuity of care.
Reception can advise you on your treatment options when your doctor is not available.
A registrar is a fully qualified doctor who is completing their postgraduate qualifications in General Practice.
They have previous experience in hospital medicine and General Practice. Registrars work closely with, and are mentored by, our senior doctors. IFMC is fortunate to have a number of registrars working with us and we encourage our patients to see these doctors.
A medical student is a person who is studying to be a doctor.
Through partnership with the Graduate School of Medicine at the University of Wollongong, medical students have clinical placements at IFMC. Students will occasionally sit in with our doctors as an important part of their training. If there is a medical student with your doctor, you will be asked your permission at the time of making your appointment and when you arrive at the practice.
You are free to decline the student’s presence if you prefer.
If you need Pathology (blood tests) or Radiology (scans) investigations you will be referred to a local collection centre.
You are able to request your choice of provider. Please be aware that some providers may charge a fee for their service.
Results from these tests are downloaded daily.
These results are then checked and signed by the referring doctor.
You will be contacted by the nurses if your doctor has requested that your results be followed up.
IFMC will not routinely call patients with normal results, unless directed by the doctor.
If you wish to check your results, please call between 11:00AM and 3:00PM weekdays and ask for the nurses.
The nurses are unable to provide advice about your results. Please make an appointment with your doctor.
Copies of results will not be given to patients without your doctor’s approval.
IFMC does not keep x-ray films. You will be asked to take your films at your appointment.
Cervical Screening Test (Pap Smear) results will no longer be sent out in the mail.
If you are concerned, please contact the practice to find out when your next Cervical Screening Test (Pap Smear) is due.
If you need advice regarding your results, please make an appointment with your doctor.
IFMC has a number of recall and reminder systems.
Regular recalls and reminders are an important way to promote early detection and modification of lifestyle risk factors, to prevent or delay the onset of chronic disease, including:
4 year check (including Healthy Kids Check and Immunisation)
Health Check for people aged 45 to 49 years who are at risk of developing chronic disease
Health Check for people aged 40 to 49 years with a high risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes
Annual Health Check for people aged 75 years and older
Patients who have had Cervical Screening Tests (Pap Smears) previously at IFMC will be contacted when they are next due for another test and are automatically enrolled in a National, State and Territory reminder system.
If you do not wish to be enrolled in our recall and reminder systems, please discuss this with your doctor.
Our staff may contact patients by phone to confirm an appointment or pass on messages from the doctors.
